“Chromaspores” is an art installation that builds directly upon the natural environment. The installation creates a calming, meditative environment through the use of gently fading Chinese paper lanterns suspended within a tree. From a distance the glow makes it an alluring destination—when you arrive you are overtaken by an oasis of captivating undulating light. It is sanctuary.
In the day you see an unevenly distributed field of white spheres suspended in a tree hung with all black rigging. But, at night the controllers’ programming creates an immersive and interactive environment with vivid changing color.
Twelve radial armatures (spokes) dangle 48 paper lantern “spores” with full color LEDs inside. Each of the spores are independently controlled, but act as a group to create dynamic, cohesive color patterns. A system of removable chains suspend the armatures and spores, limiting permanent damage and impact to the tree. Individual spores have variable lengths of chain, meaning that some spores are closer to the ground while some are high in the branches. A gathering space beneath the tree invites prolonged visits.
